1. A Name From a Sailor's Nightmare: "Boca Raton" comes from the Spanish boca de ratones, referring to the jagged, hidden rocks along the inlet that could gnaw through a ship's anchor cable — not, as often assumed, an actual rat's mouth.

2. One Architect's Grand Vision: Addison Mizner arrived in 1925 with plans to build "the world's greatest resort," and his Mediterranean Revival style — seen in the Cloister Inn and the Old Floresta district — still defines the city's look a century later.

3. A Hurricane Ended the Boom: Just months after Mizner's Cloister Inn opened in February 1926, the Hurricane of 1926 tore through South Florida and popped the land boom that built the city.

4. A Japanese Farming Colony: In the early 1900s, Japanese immigrants established the Yamato Colony on land that's now part of Boca Raton, growing pineapples long before Mizner ever arrived.

5. From Radar Base to Research Hub: Florida Atlantic University opened in 1961 on a former WWII Army Air Corps radar training base — a fitting start for a city that later became a hub for IBM's early personal computer development.
