That geography made Sanford one of Central Florida's most important shipping hubs in the 19th century, and the brick-lined downtown it built during that era is still standing and thriving today.

The Celery City: When the Great Freeze of 1894–95 wiped out Sanford's citrus groves, local farmers pivoted to celery — and by the early 1900s, Sanford had become one of the largest vegetable-shipping operations in the entire country. The "Celery City" nickname stuck, and the city's agricultural grit became the foundation for the community identity that Sanford residents are still proud of today.

3. A Downtown That Came Back: After decades as a quiet county seat, downtown Sanford roared back to life.
